MOUSSY's owner is closing its Harajuku flagship — profit down 85% in a quarter
Baroque Japan's Harajuku flagship THE SHEL'TTER TOKYO opened in 2012. With Q1 profit down 85%, the board ended the 14-year store in July 2026.

What happened
On 18 April 2012 Baroque Japan opened THE SHEL'TTER TOKYO alongside the new Tokyu Plaza Omotesando 'Omokado' complex at Jingumae crossing — a B1F-to-2F flagship staging the group's house brands, MOUSSY and SLY above all. In March 2023 it was given a major renewal into an OMO showcase, with pop-up space for ZOZOTOWN-linked D2C brands and an Instagram-live studio.
Behind the showroom the numbers were collapsing. In the year to February 2026 revenue fell 11.5 percent to ¥51.4 billion and operating profit plunged 60.5 percent to ¥321 million — a second consecutive year of decline. The March–May 2026 quarter was worse: operating profit of ¥76 million, down 84.9 percent, net profit down 85.3 percent.
On 15 July 2026 the board resolved to end the store at the expiry of its lease, with the final date left to be fixed; Baroque said the flagship's role would be carried on by individual brand stores. The domestic network had already been cut from 367 stores in February 2022 to 330.
Why it happened
- With profit collapsing and no recovery in sight, a multi-floor flagship on a Jingumae corner became a cost the income statement could not defend.
- The stated reason was lease expiry — but a company whose flagship was earning its keep would have fought to renew; Baroque let it go.
- The restructuring was already running: 37 domestic stores cut in four years and two Chinese subsidiaries sold in April 2025; the flagship was the biggest remaining item.
The lesson
A flagship is the last cost a shrinking retailer admits to. Baroque renovated THE SHEL'TTER TOKYO into a showcase in 2023; two years of falling profits later, the lease ran out and the board let it.
Aftermath
The final closing date follows the lease expiry; special events run until then. Baroque Japan continues the reorganisation with 330 domestic stores and a JD.com joint venture signed in December 2025 for China — chasing growth after giving up the stage that once performed it.
