In October 2022, Health Canada announced the recall of the Amazon Basics High Back Executive Desk Chair, an upholstered swivel chair sold on Amazon.ca from October 2021 to April 2022 in black, brown and white. The failure mode was structural: the legs could break, posing a fall hazard. Recalled units are identifiable by a horizontal piece of plastic on the bottom of the caster bracket.

As of October 7, 2022, Amazon had received 42 reports of chair breakage in Canada, including two reports of falls and no injuries. In the United States there were 13 reports of leg breakage and one minor shoulder injury. About 11,356 units had been sold globally; the manufacturer of record was Global Furniture (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd., with Amazon.com.ca, Inc. as distributor.

The remedy was characteristically Amazon: consumers upload a photograph of the chair-leg base to a recall site and certify disposal, and Amazon applies a gift card or a credit to their Amazon wallet. Health Canada reminded buyers that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits reselling or even giving away a recalled product.

The recall sat inside a wider pattern for Amazon's private-label programme — the same year its Ring doorbell batteries were recalled over fire risk, and Canadian regulators had already fined Amazon.ca over unverified list-price claims in 2017. An own-brand label turned a supplier's chair into Amazon's product safety problem.

11,356 chairs sold globally in seven months, all subject to refund; 42 incident reports in Canada, 13 in the US, including one minor shoulder injury.

The chairs sold for only about seven months before the first recall notices, but a fifth of the reports described actual falls or injuries.

The defect lived in the cheapest component — the caster bracket — of a product Amazon did not manufacture.

The refund-by-photo process made disposal the customer's job, with Amazon paying in store credit.

An own-brand label doesn't dilute responsibility: when the logo on the box is yours, the manufacturer's quality control becomes your recall.

The recall ran through Amazon's expert-inquiry site with a toll-free line; no penalty or litigation followed in the source. The chair remained identifiable for refunds by the plastic piece under the caster bracket.
