Amazing Brewing pioneered Seoul's craft beer scene — then scaled into bankruptcy
A Seongsu-dong brewpub valued at ₩32B built two breweries and raised ₩18B. When consumers switched to highballs, fixed costs crushed it.

What happened
Amazing Brewing Company was founded in 2016 in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, and became a pioneer of South Korea's craft beer movement. Its open brewpub with 60 taps and on-site brewing facilities made craft beer visible to everyday drinkers. The company attracted investment from Altos Ventures and BonAngels Partners in 2017, built an Icheon brewery in 2019, and raised approximately ₩8 billion in a Series B round in 2021. By 2022, its valuation exceeded ₩32 billion.
The company scaled aggressively, completing a second brewery and expanding distribution beyond its Seongsu base. But the market shifted beneath it. Korean consumers moved toward whiskey and highballs, the dining economy slowed, and competition in the craft beer segment intensified. Rising raw material costs compounded the pressure. The company reported operating losses exceeding ₩2 billion for two consecutive years from 2023, and accumulated deficits reached ₩14 billion by the end of 2024.
In July 2025, Amazing Brewing filed for rehabilitation with the Seoul Bankruptcy Court. M&A talks to find an acquirer failed, and the rehabilitation plan deadline was extended to January 2026. On April 21, 2026, the court declared the company bankrupt. Affiliated companies in distribution, wholesale and production also went bankrupt in succession. The total investment of approximately ₩18 billion from seed through Series B was effectively lost.
Why it happened
- Scaling from a neighborhood brewpub to a multi-brewery production company created fixed costs that required sustained volume growth the market could not deliver.
- Korean consumer preferences shifted toward whiskey and highballs just as the company had committed capital to beer production capacity.
- The ₩32 billion valuation in 2022 reflected peak craft-beer optimism, not the unit economics of a business dependent on a trend that was already fading.
- Rising raw material costs and a slowing dining economy squeezed margins at the exact moment the company needed to service its expanded fixed-cost base.
The lesson
Cultural visibility and early-mover excitement do not guarantee business durability. Scaling production capacity ahead of proven, sustained demand turns a trend slowdown into an insolvency.
Aftermath
The Seoul Bankruptcy Court set a creditor claim deadline of May 8, 2026, and a creditors' meeting for May 20. Amazing Brewing's Seongsu brewpub helped define a neighborhood's identity, but the brand's bankruptcy showed that being first does not mean being last.
