Airy Rooms switched off Indonesia's biggest budget-hotel network in one email

Founded in 2015, Airy aggregated 2,000+ properties and 30,000+ rooms across Indonesia; it laid off 70% of staff in April 2020 and shut for good on 31 May.

What happened

Airy was founded in 2015 by Danny Handoko and Samsu Sampena, two former employees of travel marketplace Traveloka. Its model was asset-light aggregation: budget hotels and guesthouses across Indonesia adopted the Airy brand and its standards while Airy handled distribution and booking. Within five years it was the country's largest budget-hotel network — more than 2,000 properties and over 30,000 rooms in more than 100 cities.

Then the pandemic removed the product's reason to exist. Indonesian travel demand collapsed in early 2020; in April Airy laid off roughly 70 percent of its staff. On 8 May 2020 partners received an email: the company had 'done our best to overcome the impact of this disaster', but given the reductions in staff it had decided to stop the business permanently. All operations and partnerships ended on 31 May 2020.

Airy was reported as the first Indonesian hospitality start-up to close permanently because of the pandemic. Unlike its venture-backed rivals, which hibernated through the trough, Airy chose a total shutdown — and 2,000 partner properties woke up de-branded, with no platform and barely three weeks' notice.

Why it happened

  • The network was pure coordination — no owned rooms, no property — so when demand vanished there was no asset to shelter behind.
  • The shutdown was fast: 70 percent layoffs in April, total closure in May, leaving no bridge to a recovery.
  • Partners carried the residual cost: thousands of small hotels lost their distribution channel in a single email.

The lesson

Airy built Indonesia's biggest budget-hotel network without owning a room; when demand vanished there was nothing to hold, and five years of network dissolved in one email.

Aftermath

Rival networks Oyo and RedDoorz weathered the pandemic and kept operating in Indonesia; the Airy brand disappeared with the platform.
