Coca-Cola's Vault — the energy soda that couldn't outrun Mello Yello

Coca-Cola launched Vault in 2005 to replace Surge — a hybrid soda-and-energy drink. Six years and a Super Bowl ad later, it was killed for Mello Yello.

Coca-Cola Company · 2005-06

怎么回事

In 2003 Coca-Cola discontinued Surge, its highly caffeinated citrus soda that had competed with Mountain Dew. By 2005 the energy-drink market was booming, and Coca-Cola wanted back in. The result was Vault — a sweetened citrus soda fortified with extra caffeine and B vitamins, marketed as a hybrid: 'Drinks like a soda, kicks like an energy drink.' It had more caffeine than Surge or Mountain Dew and was positioned to capture both the soda drinker and the energy-drink consumer.

Vault tested in ten states from June to September 2005, then launched nationally in February 2006 with a commercial during Super Bowl XL. The rollout was Coca-Cola's biggest since Diet Coke. The brand spawned variants including Vault Red Blitz (2007) and limited-run Grape and Peach flavors. For a few years Vault held its place on shelves alongside Mello Yello, Coca-Cola's other citrus soda.

In December 2011 Coca-Cola discontinued Vault, replacing it with a reintroduced Mello Yello. The company said Vault had been 'a good brand' but that Mello Yello offered a more coherent citrus portfolio. Vault had essentially been Surge reborn with extra caffeine, and like Surge before it, it could not secure a lasting place in Coca-Cola's lineup against the legacy brands.

为什么会这样

  • Vault was Surge with more caffeine and B vitamins — a reformulation rather than a new product, and it inherited Surge's inability to unseat Mountain Dew
  • Coca-Cola launched a soda-energy hybrid at a time when the market was splitting: consumers wanted either a soda or an energy drink, not a compromise between them
  • The brand was killed in favor of Mello Yello — a legacy brand Coca-Cola had neglected and could reinvest in without paying slotting fees for new products

教训

A hybrid product inherits the weaknesses of both parents. Vault was neither the best soda nor the best energy drink, and a niche between two categories is a dangerous place to live.

后来呢

Vault was discontinued in December 2011. Some flavors lived on as options in Coca-Cola Freestyle machines. The brand is remembered as a transitional product — Coca-Cola's attempt to bridge the soda and energy-drink markets without fully committing to either. Mello Yello, the brand that replaced it, was itself eventually overshadowed by Mountain Dew and remains a minor player in the citrus soda market.
