RONA's stores said 'Truly Canadian' — after the US takeover, the signs had to come down
November 2019: Canada's ad regulator ruled RONA's 'Truly Canadian' signs misleading — Lowe's had owned the chain since 2016. They came down nationwide.

怎么回事
RONA, the Quebec-founded hardware chain, kept storefront signage calling itself 'Truly Canadian' and 'Proudly Canadian' for years after Lowe's Companies, based in Mooresville, North Carolina, acquired it in 2016. In the years between, Lowe's had converted dozens of RONA stores to the Lowe's name and closed 24 RONA locations.
Two consumer complaints went to Ad Standards, Canada's advertising self-regulator, which ruled in November 2019 that the signs 'conveyed an inaccurate general impression'. RONA appealed with its operations case: founded in Canada, headquartered in Boucherville, Quebec, run by an all-Canadian executive team with every employee in Canada. The council was unmoved — the question was ownership and control, and RONA 'is not owned and controlled by a Truly Canadian entity'.
RONA removed the signage nationwide 'out of respect for the process' while saying it strongly disagreed with the ruling; Lowe's said it would not contest further because Ad Standards offers no higher appeal. Two complaints were enough to take the signs down across the country.
为什么会这样
- The claim was true when the signs went up and false after the acquisition — but the signage kept running; inherited claims were never re-reviewed under the new owner.
- The brand argued operations — history, headquarters, employees — while the regulator judged ownership; each side answered a different question.
- Self-regulation is cheap to invoke: two consumer complaints reached a binding national ruling faster than any lawsuit could.
教训
Identity claims outlive the facts that made them true — after any ownership change, re-audit what the brand says about itself, because regulators test 'who we are' against the shareholder register.
后来呢
RONA kept its Canadian operations but lost the right to claim Canadian ownership in advertising. The ruling is cited in Canadian marketing courses as the cleanest example of a claim that expires when the cap table changes.
