Palm Phone: the tiny 3.3-inch phone nobody wanted as a second device

A $349, 3.3-inch 'companion' phone, sold as a break from your smartphone, drew mocking reviews and was discontinued with support ending in 2020.

Palm Ventures Group · 2018-11-02

怎么回事

In November 2018 Palm Ventures Group, backed by TCL which owns the Palm trademark, launched a credit-card-sized phone: a 3.3-inch, 62-gram Android device sold on Verizon for $349 plus about $10 a month. Palm pitched it as 'your phone away from phone' — a companion to carry to the gym or the corner store when a big phone was too much, positioned between a smartphone and a wearable.

Reviewers admired the hardware but not the proposition. TechCrunch called it 'an idea whose time may never come,' Android Police a 'tiny tragedy,' and Ars Technica 'bad at everything.' An 800mAh battery died by noon on the first day, the camera was weak, and paying $349 on top of a bigger phone's bill to carry a second, lesser phone never added up for most buyers.

The companion pitch never found a mainstream audience. Palm later dropped the pairing requirement and sold the phone standalone — in the US at $199 from April 2019 — but the product faded, was discontinued, and official support ended in 2020.

为什么会这样

  • Palm asked buyers to pay a full phone price for a device that needed a second, bigger phone to be fully useful — a companion that could not justify its own cost.
  • The 3.3-inch screen and 800mAh battery forced constant trade-offs in apps and battery life, so the tiny form was a compromise rather than a benefit.
  • Palm leaned on a nostalgic brand name instead of a must-have capability, and the 'phone away from phone' idea never answered why the device needed to exist.

教训

A niche positioning still has to be worth its own price. Palm's tiny companion phone asked buyers to carry a second, lesser device for a monthly fee — and the answer was no.

后来呢

The Palm phone was discontinued and official support ended in 2020. Palm Ventures Group's follow-up hardware did not reach the market, and the Palm name remained a brand rather than a going product line.
