Kith sold children's pajamas that failed the federal flammability standard
Kith Retail recalled plaid Kith Kids loungewear after it violated mandatory US flammability rules for children's sleepwear, months after going on sale.
Kith Retail Inc.
怎么回事
Kith, the New York streetwear label built by Ronnie Fieg, sold a children's loungewear line under its Kith Kids brand: red-and-black plaid woven pajama sets with a long-sleeved collared top and matching pants, in sizes from 9-12 months to XL (14/16). About 130 sets were sold in Kith stores nationwide and online between December 2025 and January 2026 for roughly $75 each.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced in 2026 that Kith Retail Inc. was recalling the sets because the fabric failed the mandatory federal flammability standard for children's sleepwear — garments that ignite too easily and can cause serious burns near candles, stovetops, space heaters or fireplaces. Canada's recall authority issued a matching alert for the same 'Baby Kithmas' and 'Kids Kithmas' plaid lounge sets.
The remedy required customers to destroy the garments by cutting them in half, photograph the cut pieces, and email proof to Kith's recall address for a full refund. No injuries were reported in connection with the product before the recall.
The failure sat entirely within Kith's own compliance process: children's sleepwear flammability testing is a known, decades-old US requirement, and a streetwear label extending into a kidswear holiday line needed to clear that bar before shipping, not after a regulator caught it.
为什么会这样
- Extending a streetwear label into children's sleepwear brought a stricter, unfamiliar regulatory category — mandatory flammability testing — that apparel for adults does not require.
- The garments reached customers and were in circulation for months before the compliance failure surfaced, meaning testing or verification did not happen, or was inadequate, before the December launch.
- A recall notice and destroy-and-refund process became the public record of the mistake, turning a fixable pre-launch testing gap into a regulator-documented failure.
教训
A new product category can carry safety rules a brand's usual line never had to meet — check the standard before the launch, not after the recall notice.
