Dove's body-shaped bottles asked women to pick the shape that matched theirs
Dove's 'Real Beauty Bottles' shaped shower gel like different body types. Its own body-positive audience called it patronising, not empowering.

怎么回事
In May 2017, Dove released a limited run of body wash bottles for its 'Real Beauty' campaign, moulded into six different body shapes — some taller and narrower, some shorter and curvier — to represent, in the brand's words, the idea that 'every woman is her very own limited edition.' The bottles were sent to influencers and press rather than sold widely at retail.
The reaction on social media was immediate mockery rather than the intended celebration. Commentators pointed out that choosing a shower gel bottle now meant implicitly picking which body shape matched your own — turning a routine purchase into a body-image judgement. One widely shared tweet read: 'The Dove bottle with my body type hurts my feelings.' Others joked the campaign read like an April Fools' idea.
Marketing commentators and body-image therapists both criticised the execution: rather than diversifying who was shown as beautiful, it asked each individual customer to sort herself into a category. Dove's brand vice president said the intent was to 'spark a lively debate' about real beauty, but for a brand whose prior Real Beauty work — real women, unedited photos — had been well received, the bottles were read as a rare and avoidable misstep.
为什么会这样
- Earlier Real Beauty ads showed diverse bodies to the whole audience at once; the bottles asked each shopper to privately pick the shape closest to her own — a self-judgement dressed as inclusion.
- A shelf of six shapes implies exactly six kinds of women's bodies, a narrower claim than the brand's message of infinite individuality, and the mismatch was visible on the shelf itself.
- The message landed inside a mundane transaction — which bottle do I grab — rather than in a film the audience could watch without acting on it personally.
教训
Diversity shown to an audience and diversity asked of an individual are different acts. The first can feel like inclusion; the second can feel like a fitting-room mirror nobody asked for.
后来呢
The bottles were not put into wide retail distribution and the format was not repeated. Dove's broader Real Beauty campaign continued with its earlier format of showing varied bodies rather than asking customers to select their own.
