Coca-Cola Spiced: the first permanent flavor in three years, pulled after six months

Chosen from Freestyle data and aimed at Gen Z, Spiced launched in February 2024 as 'our boldest innovation yet' — phased out by September for failing to sell.

怎么回事

Coca-Cola Spiced launched in February 2024 as the first new permanent flavour added to the North American portfolio in over three years — a raspberry-spiced cola that was 'not spicy but our boldest tasting brand innovation yet', aimed squarely at Generation Z. The flavour had a data pedigree: raspberry combinations had been selected more than five million times on Coca-Cola Freestyle fountain machines in 2022.

It did not sell. On September 24, 2024 — six months after launch — Coca-Cola confirmed it was phasing Spiced out to make room for a new flavour in 2025, saying only that it adjusts its range to what consumers like. The target audience, health-conscious Gen Z, had little reason to add another sugared soda to its diet.

The retreat was cheap because the company had learned to fail small: Spiced joined a rotating shelf of limited editions rather than a New Coke-scale bet, and even its six months lasted longer than New Coke's 79 days in 1985. But it was still a 'permanent' flavour that was never given time to become one — chosen by machines and cancelled by spreadsheets.

为什么会这样

  • Freestyle data showed people would try the combination on a novelty fountain machine — trial on a dispenser is not repeat purchase of a can, and the two were read as one signal
  • The flavour was aimed at the cohort least likely to buy more sugared soda — Gen Z's health-conscious drift was visible in the same data the company tracks
  • 'Permanent' was a launch claim, not a commitment: the portfolio now rotates flavours like limited editions, so a slow start is a death sentence inside one season
代价First permanent flavor in 3 years, dead in 6 months丢脸

教训

Trial data from a novelty channel is curiosity, not demand — a flavour chosen because people tried it once on a machine still has to earn the repeat purchase of a can.
