What happened
Zooty (有限会社ズーティー), based in Kobe, Hyogo, was founded in 1999 with a store in Kobe's Motomachi district. It planned and sold original apparel and general merchandise, operating the E-Zakka Mania Stores brand online and through retail stores in Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto and Osaka.
The brand targeted young women with low-priced ladies' apparel and general merchandise, and its sales peaked at about ¥4.25 billion in the year ending September 2022.
The business declined under COVID-19 and the contraction of physical retail, while the weak yen raised procurement prices and squeezed what margin remained. Cash-flow strain mounted as costs rose faster than the cheap-price model could pass them on.
On April 15, 2025, Zooty stopped business and entered self-bankruptcy. Together with related companies including Arq, Loop and Loop Logistics, the total liabilities were estimated at about ¥3 billion.
Why it happened
- The low-price ladies' apparel model depended on high volume in physical stores, which COVID-19 and the contraction of retail steadily eroded.
- The weak yen raised procurement prices, squeezing a margin that a bargain-price brand has almost no room to raise.
- Cash-flow strain built up as costs rose, and the company had no buffer left when the retail contraction continued.
- Founded in 1999 around a single store format, the brand could not adapt quickly enough as its mall and street locations lost traffic.
The lesson
A bargain apparel business leaves no room when costs rise: Zooty's E-Zakka Mania sold cheap goods in volume, and when COVID-19 cut traffic and the weak yen raised costs, the model had no margin.
Aftermath
On April 15, 2025, Zooty stopped business and entered self-bankruptcy. With related companies Arq, Loop and Loop Logistics, total liabilities were estimated at about ¥3 billion. The Kobe firm had run E-Zakka Mania Stores since 1999, selling low-priced ladies' apparel that peaked at ¥4.25 billion in sales before COVID-19, retail contraction and the weak yen ended it.
