What happened

Yeonseung Apparel, a Korean fashion company founded in 1998, closed its operations in April 2025. The company was best known for operating the Clyde & N (클라이드앤) menswear brand, which had been in the market for 27 years. All employees were let go and franchise store owners were instructed to clear out their inventory by June 2025.

The closure reflected the broader challenges facing mid-market Korean fashion brands in a rapidly changing retail environment. Traditional department store-oriented fashion companies faced declining foot traffic, rising competition from fast fashion and online-only brands, and changing consumer preferences toward casual and athleisure wear over tailored menswear.

Yeonseung Apparel's demise was part of a wave of closures in the Korean fashion industry in 2024–2025. Several other established Korean fashion brands and retailers either shut down or significantly downsized during the same period, as the industry struggled with sluggish domestic consumption, rising operating costs, and the shift to online shopping accelerated by the pandemic.

Why it happened

  • Declining foot traffic in traditional department stores — Clyde & N's primary sales channel — made the store-based retail model unsustainable.
  • Rising competition from fast fashion giants (Spao, Topten, SPA brands) and online-only labels eroded mid-market Korean fashion brands' market share.
  • The shift toward casual and athleisure wear reduced demand for the tailored menswear segment where Clyde & N competed.
  • Yeonseung Apparel did not successfully adapt its business model to the digital-first retail environment, leaving it vulnerable to the structural decline of department store fashion.

The lesson

A decades-old fashion brand built on department store distribution cannot survive the shift to digital-first retail without fundamentally rethinking how customers discover and buy its products.

Aftermath

Yeonseung Apparel's headquarters was closed and its website taken offline. Franchise store owners were given until June 2025 to sell remaining inventory. The Clyde & N brand ceased to exist, with no plans for revival or acquisition. The closure added to a growing list of Korean fashion industry casualties in 2025 as the sector underwent a painful structural transformation.
