The suit giant bought a surf-lifestyle brand — ten years later, every store is gone
WTW, the beach-lifestyle shop launched by BALS in 2011, passed to suit giant Aoyama Trading in 2016. On 11 February 2026 its last store closed.

What happened
WTW (Double T) was launched in February 2011 by BALS — the company now known as Francfranc — as a lifestyle shop built on the concept 'URBAN.SURF.NATURAL': furniture, interior goods and apparel with a Californian, sea-side flavour. The first store stood in Aoyama; in time there were six, including Futako-Tamagawa, Horie in Osaka and Ariake Garden.
In April 2016 Aoyama Trading — Japan's suit giant behind Yofuku no Aoyama and The Suit Company — bought all of WTW's shares from BALS, a diversification move beyond business wear. The brand kept running under its own operating company.
Ten years on, the bet ended. The online store stopped selling on 25 January 2026; the physical stores closed one by one through February — Ariake on the 10th, the Aoyama flagship last, on 11 February. No reason was announced and no successor named: after fifteen years the brand wound down completely.
Why it happened
- A suit chain's buying muscle and customer base were a world away from surf-lifestyle; under Aoyama the brand never grew beyond a handful of stores.
- Six stores could not justify their own operating company once the parent stopped seeing the brand as strategic.
- The wind-down came with no sale, no transfer and no stated reason — an exit, not a restructuring.
The lesson
Buying a brand your own customers don't shop at is diversification in name only. Aoyama Trading bought WTW to get beyond suits; ten years and six stores later it wound the brand down without a word.
Aftermath
Aoyama Trading continues with its core suit chains — Yofuku no Aoyama, The Suit Company, Suit Square — while the WTW name ends without an announced successor. BALS, the brand's original creator, long ago became Francfranc.
