Leicester streetwear shop Wellgosh falls into receivership, closing after 35 years
Leicester's Wellgosh, 35 years old and a pillar of UK streetwear, fell into receivership in 2023 and shut all three stores plus its site.

What happened
Wellgosh grew out of a small store in Leicester's Silver Arcade opened in 1988, building a reputation as one of the UK's leading stockists of streetwear and menswear brands. In January 2021 the listed sportswear giant JD Sports acquired it for an undisclosed sum, folding the family-run retailer into its group.
Under JD Sports the brand kept adding stores — a new Nottingham location in October 2021 and a larger Birmingham flagship in July 2022 — expanding its footprint just as the UK high street tightened. When the market turned, JD Sports chose to stop funding the brand rather than carry the losses.
In March 2023 Wellgosh announced its closure after 35 years, and trade press reported it had fallen into receivership, with JD Sports confirming the failure. The three stores and the ecommerce site closed, and JD Sports said the locations would be converted into its Size? brand. Fashion Network, Drapers and FashionUnited all covered the shutdown.

The lesson
Heritage does not protect an independent from its own owner: once JD Sports stopped funding Wellgosh against a tough high street, 35 years of credibility did not slow the receivership.
Aftermath
In March 2023 Wellgosh announced it was closing after 35 years; JD Sports confirmed the failure and said the three stores would be converted into its own Size? brand in due course. The closure wiped out the Leicester flagship, the Nottingham store and the Birmingham store, plus the ecommerce site. It ended a business that had grown from a single shop in Leicester's Silver Arcade in 1988 into one of the UK's most respected streetwear stockists, and the collapse was read as another sign of the high street squeezing independent multi-brand retail.
