Luxury-flaunting influencer 王红权星 was banned across platforms over his 炫富 content

Luxury-flaunting influencer 王红权星 built a 4.3M-follower persona on 炫富 content, then was banned across Douyin, Weibo and Xiaohongshu in May 2024.

What happened

王红权星, a self-described multi-millionaire influencer, built a Douyin following of about 4.3 million on a persona of conspicuous luxury: walls of designer bags, imperial-green jade jewellery, shopping sprees at auction houses, and the tagline that he would not leave home unless his outfit was worth eight figures.

He claimed seven apartments in Beijing's Xinghewan district, the largest 991 square metres, and opened a physical store near the SKP luxury mall. Behind the persona sat four companies, including a leather-goods maker and a jewellery firm.

On the evening of 21 May 2024 he was banned or blocked across platforms — Douyin, Weibo and Xiaohongshu — not long after multiple platforms announced special drives against 奢靡浪费 and 炫富拜金 content in mid-May. His Douyin account showed a banned message and his last live stream had been on 30 March.

The purge, part of a wider 清朗 regulatory campaign against 炫富 and 无底线 content, wiped out the audience he had built on that single positioning.

Why it happened

  • He built the entire brand on a 炫富 persona, a positioning regulators and platforms had already flagged for targeting, so the purge took the whole business at once.
  • The persona was a single bet with no fallback: when the account policy flipped, his store and companies lost their only marketing channel.
  • Making wealth-flaunting the content made him a high-profile target, so a compliance crackdown that other influencers could weather wiped him out entirely.

The lesson

When a brand is built entirely on a positioning regulators are already threatening, one policy change can delete the whole business — tolerated conduct is a liability, not a moat.

Aftermath

王红权星's Douyin account showed a banned message, he was blocked on Weibo and disappeared from Xiaohongshu. Of his four companies, one had already been deregistered by the time of the purge.
