Profumerie Vezzoli, a 65-year-old Lombardy perfumery chain, was liquidated in 2025

What happened
Profumerie Vezzoli was a family perfumery business based in Rovato, in Italy's Brescia province, running shops in three towns — Rovato, Erbusco and Sarnico — since 1960. In 2024 the company had been entered in Lombardy's register of historic businesses, recognition of more than six decades of continuous trading.
A year later it was gone. On 30 June 2025 the Court of Brescia opened judicial liquidation proceedings (procedure 151/2025) and all three stores were closed at the same time. The court-supervised procedure exists to sell off the company's assets for its creditors.
Local coverage attributed the collapse to large-scale distribution and Amazon: the big perfumery chains and online retail had taken the customers that had kept three small-town perfume shops alive for 65 years. The company's commercial property was later put up for sale as part of the liquidation.
Why it happened
- Large-scale distribution and Amazon took the customers that had kept three small-town perfumeries alive for 65 years.
- A three-store family business had no answer to online pricing and range, and no buyer appeared before the cash ran out.
- Recognition as a historic business in 2024 translated into no protection — within a year the court was winding the company up.
The lesson
A historic-business badge does not pay the rent: the small-town retail model needs a digital answer before the chains and the platforms arrive, not after.
