Nike paused a Travis Scott launch and Epic pulled his Fortnite items after Astroworld
After ten died at his Astroworld festival, Nike postponed Scott's Air Max launch and Epic removed his Fortnite emote; a grand jury later declined to indict him.

What happened
On 5 November 2021, ten people died in a crowd surge at the Astroworld Festival in Houston, where Travis Scott was the headliner. Within days the brands around him moved: Nike postponed the launch of his Air Max 1 x Cactus Jack collaboration, saying it acted 'out of respect for everyone impacted by the tragic events at the Astroworld Festival', and Epic Games removed his 'Out West' Fortnite emote and disabled the game's Daily item shop section, without giving a reason.
The commercial freeze was real but not permanent. On 20 May 2022 Nike resumed the partnership with the Cactus Jack Air Trainer 1. On 29 June 2023 the Harris County district attorney announced that a grand jury had declined to indict Scott and five others over the festival deaths.
Why it happened
- A launch scheduled for the days after a tragedy is a risk no brand wants to carry: Nike's postponement, 'out of respect for everyone impacted', arrived within days.
- The pause was a choice, not a verdict: the grand jury declined to indict Scott in June 2023, and Nike quietly resumed in May 2022 — the cost was timing and exposure, not the deal itself.
- Epic's removal, with no reason given, showed the second-order risk: every product tied to the name became a liability at once.
The lesson
A campaign that rides on one person's live events inherits that person's worst day: when tragedy strikes, the pause comes first and the questions are answered later.
Aftermath
The Harris County district attorney announced on 29 June 2023 that a grand jury had declined to indict Scott and five others in connection with the festival deaths. Nike's pause proved temporary: the Cactus Jack line returned with the Air Trainer 1 on 20 May 2022. Epic Games did not restore the emote.
