Tesla's Cybertruck was recalled ten times in under two years, including a stuck accelerator pedal and a trim panel glued on so poorly it could fly off at speed.

What happened
Tesla began delivering the Cybertruck in November 2023 after years of delay, built around a stainless-steel 'exoskeleton' body panel design with sharp angles that safety experts had already flagged as risky for pedestrians before launch. Within two months of deliveries starting, the truck's first recall arrived — for warning-light text too small to read on the instrument panel.
More followed in quick succession. In April 2024, Tesla recalled Cybertrucks because the accelerator pedal's cover could dislodge and wedge against the footwell trim, physically trapping the pedal down and causing unintended acceleration. In June 2024, two separate recalls covered a trunk-bed trim piece that could come loose on the road and a windshield wiper motor that could fail outright.
The pattern continued through the year: a rearview camera image delayed enough to increase backing-up crash risk, a drive inverter fault that could cut power entirely, and a tire-pressure warning bug — six recalls in Cybertruck's first twelve months on the road. In March 2025, Tesla recalled nearly the entire Cybertruck fleet built to that point after the stainless-steel exterior trim panels, attached with adhesive, were found to detach and fly off at highway speed.
By October 2025, not yet two years after first deliveries, the Cybertruck had been recalled ten times — the tenth for headlights bright enough to blind oncoming drivers. Four of the ten were resolved with a software update; the rest required owners to bring the truck in for a physical repair.
Why it happened
- Tesla shipped a body design — stainless-steel panels attached by adhesive — without validating that the bond would hold up to sustained highway vibration and weather.
- The accelerator pedal's trim assembly let a foreign object physically jam the pedal in the depressed position, a failure mode a mechanical review should have caught before delivery.
- Ten recalls spanning software, wiring, adhesive and tire sensors point to a launch that outran the truck's own quality validation across the board, not one isolated defect.
- Software-fixable issues shipped alongside physical defects requiring a dealer visit, meaning owners bore the inconvenience of assembly-level mistakes a slower launch could have caught first.
The lesson
A headline-grabbing design isn't a substitute for durability validation. Ten recalls in two years isn't ten bugs — it's a pattern saying customers got the truck before the engineering was finished.
Aftermath
The Cybertruck's recall count is now a standard reference point in coverage of Tesla's quality control, cited alongside its slower-than-projected sales as evidence the launch prioritized spectacle over the validation cycle a conventional automaker would have run before deliveries began.
