Superdry's KOREA T-shirt got the flag's trigrams wrong — recalled in its own market
Superdry's 'Seoul Haetae' T-shirt printed the Korean flag's four trigrams in the wrong order — a professor flagged it and the operator recalled.

What happened
Superdry, the UK-founded global fashion brand, sold a 'Seoul Haetae Graphic T-shirt' through its official Korean stores and online mall. Printed across the back were the words 'Seoul' and 'KOREA', an illustration of a Haetae (the mythical lion-dog of Korean folklore), and the four trigrams (건곤감리) that sit in the corners of South Korea's national flag, the Taegeukgi. The trigrams were arranged in the wrong order — the layout did not match how they appear on the actual flag.
The error was reported by netizens and confirmed on 28 July 2026 by Professor Seo Kyeong-deok of Sungshin Women's University, who publicises mistakes in the use of Korean national symbols on social media. He called it 'clearly a mistake, not intentional,' but said global companies must run a thorough review whenever they use a nation's symbols in design, and pointed to the same problem at UAE Shake Shack and at New Balance in the same period.
Superdry's Korean operator, Pond Group, responded that the shirt had launched in October 2025. After confirming the graphic error it halted sales and recalled the product, corrected the trigram arrangement and reprinted it; a corrected version has been on sale since roughly early March 2026.
The controversy landed during a wider string of national-symbol misuses by foreign brands in Korea — comparable trigram errors had surfaced at the Qatar World Cup and LEGOLAND years earlier — so one T-shirt became another proof point that global brands do not check the flag before they print it.
Why it happened
- The operator sent a design built on a national symbol to market without verifying the trigram order against the actual Taegeukgi — a check that takes minutes and was never done.
- The error surfaced only after a professor's public post, not through any brand-side review, so the design-release process had no flag-accuracy gate.
- Because the garment also carried the words 'KOREA' and 'Seoul', the mistake read as a foreign brand mishandling the country's most recognisable symbol inside its own market.
- The recall and reprint were purely reactive: the operator had to halt sales, pull stock and reissue, absorbing the cost of a check that should have happened before launch.
- It was the latest in a recurring series (UAE Shake Shack, New Balance, the Qatar World Cup, LEGOLAND), so the failure was procedural, not a one-off accident.
The lesson
Using a nation's flag is a licence you do not own: its citizens become your reviewers. One wrong trigram on a 'KOREA' shirt turns a launch into a recall and the brand into a headline.
Aftermath
On 28 July 2026 Professor Seo Kyeong-deok confirmed netizen reports that the trigram arrangement on Superdry's Seoul Haetae T-shirt did not match the Taegeukgi. Superdry's Korean operator, Pond Group, said the shirt had launched in October 2025; after confirming the error it halted sales and recalled the product, corrected the trigram layout and reprinted, and the corrected version has been sold since around early March 2026. Seo noted the same errors had appeared at UAE Shake Shack and New Balance in the same period.
