Style Theory raised $15M from SoftBank, shut with no refunds — fashion rental's collapse
Singapore fashion rental platform Style Theory raised US$15M in Series B, expanded to Indonesia, then collapsed in September 2025, leaving subscribers unpaid.

What happened
Style Theory was founded in 2016 by Raena Lim and Chris Halim, a Singaporean couple who saw an opportunity in fashion rental. Subscribers paid S$89 per month to borrow designer clothes and accessories through the app. At its peak, the company raised US$15 million in Series B funding from SoftBank Ventures Asia, Alpha JWC Ventures, Quest Ventures and The Paradise Group, and expanded to open a flagship store and launch a Hong Kong operation.
The model looked clever: access over ownership for luxury fashion, a growing category with strong consumer interest. But the economics never worked at scale. Operating costs rose as logistics (cleaning, maintenance, delivery) swallowed margins. In 2025 the Indonesia business closed in June, a clear signal that the regional expansion had failed. By September 30, 2025, the entire Singapore operation shut down with no warning to subscribers.
The closure was handled poorly. Active subscribers received no refunds for unused membership periods. Customers with rented apparel were told to keep the items; those with rented bags were asked to return them without compensation for their deposits. Consignors who had placed luxury goods on the platform’s Second Edit marketplace were told they would not be paid directly but could pursue claims through the liquidators. The company cited rising costs and the withdrawal of key investors.
Why it happened
- Fashion rental economics are brutally thin: cleaning, dry-cleaning, logistics and damage repair consume most of the S$89 monthly fee, leaving no margin even at scale.
- The withdrawal of key investors after the Indonesia expansion failed left Style Theory without the cash needed to sustain operations or return subscriber deposits.
- Style Theory expanded geographically (Hong Kong, Indonesia) and vertically (Second Edit marketplace) simultaneously, stretching management and capital across too many bets at once.
The lesson
Subscription rental for luxury goods works as a fantasy but collapses when logistics cost more than the subscriber pays. A platform that holds deposits must never run out of cash.
Aftermath
Style Theory ceased all operations in Singapore as of September 30, 2025. The company entered liquidation. Active subscribers lost prepaid membership fees. Customers who had rented bags were asked to return them. Consignors on the Second Edit marketplace were referred to the liquidators for claims. The Indonesia business had already closed in June 2025.
