Sono's Sion: 43,000 reservations, no factory — the solar car died at 3,500
The €25,000 solar hatchback held 43,000 reservations but needed 3,500 paid ones in 50 days to fund the factory. It missed; the Sion died Feb 2023.

What happened
The Sion was the solar car that almost was: a €25,000 hatchback whose panels added free range while parked in the sun, with 43,000 reservations — half of them private buyers, half fleet interest. What it never had was a factory, or the money to build one.
When equity markets closed to mobility tech in 2022, Sono Motors turned to its fans: the #saveSion campaign asked for 3,500 fully paid reservations in 50 days to fund tooling and reach production in early 2024. The deadline slipped, the target missed. On February 24, 2023, Sono dropped the Sion — 300 layoffs, deposits refunded in installments, and the whole program, IP and hardware, put up for sale.
The pivot named the real business: Sono survived as a B2B solar supplier, bolting panels onto buses and other makers' vehicles. The consumer car had been the fundraising story; when the story could no longer raise money, the car was the first cost cut.
Why it happened
- 43,000 reservations were interest, not capital — the campaign that mattered needed 3,500 customers to prepay a car with no factory, and interest would not fund tooling
- The Sion was the company's funding engine, about 90% of its 2023 financing need — a product whose business case is its own fundraising collapses when the market stops listening
- Capital-light was the admission: the solar technology had value, the car company did not — the consumer shell consumed the cash the B2B business could not spare
The lesson
Reservations measure interest; tooling needs capital — a product whose factory is funded by its own pre-order campaign is a fundraising story wearing a car costume.
