Sole Street Shoes, a Denver streetwear fixture for 21 years, is closing

Sole Street Shoes, the family-owned sneaker and streetwear store founded by Zach Monks in 2005, is permanently closing its store on Denver's 16th Street Mall after 21 years. Announced in late July 2026, the closure ends a run that began in 2005 and survived a 2022 relocation within the mall. The store sold athletic footwear, retro releases, sports jerseys and streetwear, and styled itself as a Denver original rather than a chain.

In its farewell statement the store named the forces it could no longer overcome: "The failed remodel of 16th Street Mall, lack of support from the Business Improvement District, rising costs such as tariffs, and a sharp decline in demand for products have created challenges we can no longer overcome." It signed off by thanking Denver for "the memories, the conversations, the loyalty, and the love."

The closure lands as 16th Street Mall — long the retail spine of downtown Denver — struggles with vacancies, safety concerns and a troubled redevelopment, and as tariffs raise costs for independent retailers already losing sales online.
