A Shell station's ad staged bagging a female customer — pulled in a weekend
September 2025: a Shell franchise in Crespo, Argentina posted a sketch where staff bag a female customer and truck her away. Apologies and a probe followed.

What happened
In September 2025 the Instagram account of a Shell-branded service station run by Eric Wagner y Cia. in Crespo, Entre Ríos, posted a comic sketch: two employees complain about a female customer they find unbearable, then put her inside a large trash bag, load her onto a truck heading to another province, and joke about the relief of her absence.
The video went viral under condemnation. Periodistas Feministas de Entre Ríos denounced it as media and symbolic gender violence; a Buenos Aires senator publicly criticised the brand; and Raízen, Shell's licensee in Argentina, issued a statement condemning 'toda forma de violencia y discriminación' and promising measures. A local justice of the peace opened an inquiry under provincial gender-violence protection law.
The station removed the video and apologised on Facebook, acknowledging the content could be read as making light of gender violence. The agency Aixa Contenidos Digital went further, assuming full responsibility for the idea, the production and the publication, with its director admitting the message was wrong. A local franchise's social post had become a national brand crisis inside a weekend.
Why it happened
- The sketch made getting rid of a woman the punchline; a joke built on disposal reads as endorsement the moment it leaves the local audience.
- A franchise social account carries national-brand reach with no national-brand review: the post went out under the Shell name through no gate at all.
- The agency owning the idea afterwards reveals the chain — franchise approved, agency produced, and nobody involved asked what the scene meant.
The lesson
A franchise account speaks with the whole brand's authority. If a joke needs a person being disposed of for its punchline, no production chain should let it reach posting.
Aftermath
Raízen said it would take measures with the franchisee, and the case joined Argentine media-literacy debates about advertising and gender violence. The agency's assumption of blame became the example of where liability lands when a local creative chain breaks.
