Seedmol's collaboration with a controversial streamer broke a decade of customer trust

A decade-old Korean skincare brand ran one paid video with a streamer its customers rejected; two days later it pulled the set, stopped sales and apologised.

What happened

Seedmol (시드물) is a Korean skincare brand that spent roughly a decade growing on ingredients, price and word of mouth rather than advertising, with a largely female customer base. The collaboration began the way collaborations rarely do: the internet streamer 과즙세연 posted her own product review, then contacted the company directly to propose working together.

On 19–20 April 2026 a paid video appeared on her YouTube channel and a limited collaboration set went on sale. The backlash was immediate: customers said her public image was incompatible with what the brand stood for. Long-time buyers posted 'I have used this brand for ten years and I am leaving' and 'ten years of trust, collapsed in an instant', and screenshots of deleted accounts flooded the brand's own forums.

On 21 April Seedmol pulled the set, stopped sales and apologised, calling it 'a poor judgment that betrayed the values Seedmol has pursued and the trust of our customers'. Founder Min Jung-ki said the company had focused so narrowly on product development that outside marketing review had been neglected: 'I did not know the ways of the world. I should have checked more carefully before deciding.'

Why it happened

  • The brand's only asset was trust earned by not advertising; hiring a face the core customer base rejected spent that asset in a single video
  • Vetting focused on the streamer's reach, not her fit: the collaboration grew out of an unsolicited review, and no one checked what the association meant to ten-year customers
  • Withdrawal came within two days, which limited the damage but confirmed the customers' point — the campaign money and a decade of goodwill were written off together

The lesson

A brand built on trust rather than reach cannot borrow an audience without checking the price of it. One miscast collaboration can spend ten years of goodwill in two days.

Aftermath

Seedmol withdrew the collaboration entirely, halted sales of the set and promised stricter vetting; the streamer's pinned comment had promised more products soon. Korean media counted the case as proof that for a loyalty-based brand, a model choice is a values statement, and the boycott posts stayed on the brand's forums as a record of how fast ten-year customers turned.
