Sasquatch! played seventeen summers and took a final bow

What happened
Sasquatch! was founded in 2002 by Adam Zacks, a Pacific Northwest promoter then with House of Blues, who bet on a hunch: an eclectic festival at The Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington, with 'a uniquely Northwest flavor'. Held on Memorial Day weekend, it ran for seventeen editions as one of the region's defining festivals.
The strain showed late. A second weekend added in 2014 after a strong 2013 was cancelled for lack of support — the expansion 'was not embraced', the promoter conceded — and the festival reverted to one weekend. By 2017 headliner cancellations were the story: Frank Ocean pulled out, replaced by LCD Soundsystem; Mac Miller by Sir Mix-a-Lot. The 2018 edition, headlined by Bon Iver, Modest Mouse and The National, proved to be the last.
On 28 June 2018 Zacks announced the festival was over, indefinitely. No financials were offered — just the framing that '17 years is a long time to do anything' and a farewell: 'Today we take a bow and bid a fond farewell to Sasquatch!' It never returned.
Why it happened
- The growth bet misread the audience: a second weekend in 2014 was cancelled when fans refused to follow.
- The bill got harder to hold: 2017's headliner cancellations signalled rising booking risk on a remote site.
- The founder chose the exit himself — a festival ended while it could still take a bow.
The lesson
Sasquatch! survived seventeen summers at the Gorge but not its own ambition's aftermath — the failed second weekend came first, the farewell press release four years later.
Aftermath
The Gorge kept hosting concerts, but Sasquatch! never returned. It remains the cleanest case of a festival ending on its founder's terms.
