Robin Hood (2018): Lionsgate's $100M reboot lost $83.7M

Summit's modern Robin Hood cost $100M, grossed $86.5M worldwide — and lost $83.7M, the third time the legend flopped on screen in a decade.

What happened

Robin Hood — Lionsgate's modern reimagining of the legendary outlaw, directed by TV director Otto Bathurst and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way — cost $100 million. It was the latest in a decade of attempts to reboot the legend for a modern audience.

Released November 21, 2018 against Ralph Breaks the Internet and Creed II, it grossed $86.5 million worldwide. Deadline's annual cost analysis calculated the net loss at $83.7 million, and critics' comparisons to 2017's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword — another $100M+ medieval reboot that flopped — became the story.

The failure followed the pattern exactly: a beloved legend with no modern hook, a modern-dress gimmick that pleased neither tradition nor novelty, and a release buried under bigger films — the third Robin Hood flop of the decade proved the property, not the execution, was the problem.

Why it happened

  • The legend had been tried and failed repeatedly: King Arthur (2017) and Robin Hood before it had both flopped, and Lionsgate funded a third medieval reboot with no evidence the audience existed.
  • The modern-dress gimmick solved nothing: updating the story without updating its appeal left the film neither traditional enough for nostalgia nor fresh enough for novelty.
  • The release was an afterthought: opening the Wednesday before Thanksgiving against the year's biggest family film, the $86.5M gross showed the studio had priced its own bet as a loss leader.

The lesson

A third failed reboot is evidence, not bad luck: Robin Hood's $83.7M loss followed King Arthur's, and both followed the same math — a legend without a modern hook is not a franchise, it is a costume.
