Diddy quit as Revolt chairman; his stake was later redeemed as suits mounted

After Cassie's lawsuit, Combs stepped aside as Revolt chairman in Nov 2023; by June 2024 his shares were redeemed and staff owned the company.

What happened

Revolt was Sean 'Diddy' Combs' answer to MTV: a music-and-culture television network and media platform he co-founded in 2013. When Cassie's assault lawsuit landed in November 2023 — settled within days — and two more accusers filed in the weeks after, the chairman's name became the network's risk.

On 28 November 2023, Revolt announced Combs would temporarily step aside as chairman. The network's own statement drew the line itself: 'While Mr Combs has previously had no operational or day-to-day role in the business, this decision helps to ensure that Revolt remains steadfastly focused on our mission.'

The break became permanent. On 4 June 2024, Revolt said Combs' shares had been fully redeemed and retired and that employees would become the company's largest shareholder group. The network he founded was formally severed from him.

Why it happened

  • A founder's name was the brand: every lawsuit headline named the network's chairman, so the company's only defence was to make him operationally irrelevant.
  • The temporary step-aside became permanent: once the suits kept coming, returning him was never viable, and the redemption erased his financial interest too.
  • The network had to show advertisers and partners a clean line — the statement stressing he had 'no operational or day-to-day role' was the distance Revolt needed.

The lesson

A founder's name is brand equity until it is a liability: Revolt survived by erasing him — from the chairman's seat, then from the cap table. Price in the day the celebrity must be removed.

Aftermath

Revolt continues to operate under employee ownership; Combs has not returned as chairman.
