Premium ran Berlin's biggest trade show for 21 years — then cancelled it

The trade fair that anchored Berlin Fashion Week for two decades tried a move to Frankfurt, came back for one last edition, and then shut down for good.

What happened

Premium launched in Berlin in 2003 and grew into the anchor trade fair of Berlin Fashion Week, drawing international buyers and hundreds of exhibitors to its Gleisdreieck venue for two decades. Its sister event Seek, a smaller streetwear-focused fair launched in 2009, ran alongside it.

Premium's organizers experimented with relocating the show to Frankfurt as attendance and international participation declined after the pandemic, then brought it back to Berlin for what turned out to be a final edition in summer 2023 at Messe Berlin.

In November 2023, Premium Group announced it would not hold a January 2024 edition or any future one, ending the fair after 21 years. Seek, the smaller streetwear show, continued to run on its own.

Why it happened

  • Large trade-fair formats built around in-person buyer traffic lost relevance as the industry shifted toward digital ordering and smaller, specialized showcases.
  • Relocating to Frankfurt and back within a few years signaled the format's core problem was demand, not venue, and moving cities did not fix declining international attendance.
  • Keeping Seek alive while cutting Premium showed the organizers judged the boutique, niche format viable and the broad general fair no longer was.

The lesson

A trade fair's brand and history do not guarantee its format ages well — when buyer behavior moves to smaller and digital, cutting the flagship rather than reviving it is the more honest call.

Aftermath

Berlin Fashion Week continued without Premium, restructuring its calendar around smaller events; Seek kept running with around 200 exhibitors.
