What happened
Paul Kammerer (1880–1926) was an Austrian biologist at the University of Vienna's Institute for Experimental Biology who believed in Lamarckian inheritance — the idea that organisms can pass on traits acquired during their lifetime. His most famous experiment involved the midwife toad (Alytes obstetricans), a species whose males normally lack the dark nuptial pads that other toads use for mating. Kammerer claimed that by forcing the toads to breed in water, the males developed nuptial pads — and that the trait was inherited by subsequent generations.
In 1926, Dr. Gladwyn Kingsley Noble, curator of reptiles at the American Museum of Natural History, examined the specimen under a microscope. He found that the black pads were not natural tissue — they had been injected with India ink. The fraud was exposed in a paper published in Nature. Kammerer's scientific credibility was destroyed. Six weeks later, on September 23, 1926, he walked into the forest of Schneeberg and shot himself. He was 46 years old.
The Kammerer affair became one of the most famous cases of research fraud in biology. It discredited Lamarckian inheritance in the West, though the theory was championed in the Soviet Union by Trofim Lysenko, whose own fraudulent agricultural research would later cause widespread famine. The case remains a cautionary tale about the intersection of ideology, ambition, and scientific integrity.

The case is still cited in research ethics as a textbook example of fabrication and the importance of independent verification.
