Orthopride tore up its Santos FC sponsorship the day the club signed Robinho

Santos re-signed a striker convicted of rape in Italy; within 24 hours its jersey sponsor Orthopride cancelled its contract rather than share the shirt.

What happened

In October 2020, Santos FC signed 36-year-old striker Robinho to a five-month contract. In November 2017, a court in Milan had convicted Robinho, in first instance, of gang-raping a woman with five other men; the ruling was under appeal and not yet final, so under Brazilian law he remained free to play.

Santos had not consulted its sponsors before announcing the signing. Every sponsor the club carried on its jersey said it had been caught by surprise. Orthopride, a chain of orthodontics franchises that had a shirt-sponsorship deal with Santos running until February 2021, acted first.

On October 14, 2020, Orthopride's director Richard Adam told reporters the company was cancelling its sponsorship: its customer base was mostly women, and in respect for them it could not keep its logo on a shirt worn by Robinho. He added the company had not been informed of the signing in advance.

Santos president Orlando Rollo dismissed the backlash as sour grapes from rival fans and noted Robinho had no final conviction. Two days later, on October 16, newly surfaced wiretap transcripts of Robinho discussing the incident pushed the rest of the roster's sponsors — Kicaldo, Tekbond, Philco, Foxlux and betting site Casa de Apostas — to tell Santos in writing that they would pull out too unless the club cut him. Santos and Robinho jointly announced the suspension of his contract that day. Robinho's lawyers maintained his innocence.

Why it happened

  • A club can sign whoever it wants, but a sponsor's logo is not obligated to travel with that decision — Orthopride simply exercised the option Santos assumed it wouldn't.
  • Not consulting sponsors before the announcement turned a football decision into a sponsor-relations crisis on day one, with every partner reacting in public rather than in private.
  • Citing its own customers, not the court case, gave Orthopride a clean exit that needed no verdict to justify — the reputational risk was already priced in the moment the signing became news.

The lesson

Orthopride cancelled its Santos sponsorship within a day of the club signing a striker facing a rape conviction on appeal, before any other sponsor had acted.

Aftermath

Orthopride's exit made it the first Santos sponsor to take concrete action; within two days every other jersey sponsor had put the same ultimatum to the club in writing. On October 16, 2020, as wiretap transcripts of Robinho surfaced, Santos suspended his contract rather than lose the rest of its sponsor roster. Robinho briefly returned to Santos in 2022 before protests over his case forced another split. Brazil's Superior Court of Justice ratified the Italian sentence in March 2024, and Robinho began serving a nine-year term in Brazil; an appeal upheld the ruling in July 2026.
