Onygo, Deichmann's women's sneaker chain, shuts all 23 stores after rescue fails

Onygo was a German shoe and fashion chain aimed squarely at young women — sneakers and fashionable clothing in city-centre and mall stores, grown for many years under the Deichmann group into a nationwide network of 28 branches by autumn 2023, with roots in Hamburg's Elbe shopping centre and the Europa Passage.

The parent walked away first. In autumn 2023 Deichmann announced its withdrawal, with a plan that originally ran to closing all stores by August 2024. The chain shrank but kept trading, and in April 2025 it still ran 23 branches when it filed for insolvency. Managing director Frank Revermann spent the following months in intensive talks with landlords and suppliers, who made concessions — but the search for an investor stayed unsuccessful.

In August 2025 Onygo confirmed it was ceasing operations immediately: every branch nationwide would close, and around 150 employees lost their jobs. Revermann named the massive consumer reticence in the shoe segment as the main cause; press coverage added the sharper diagnosis that the chain had missed how completely its young target group had already moved its shopping online. The Europa Passage store, the last one standing, closed with the rest.
