What happened
Ola Electric launched the S1 Pro in August 2021 with 100,000 orders in 24 hours and sold about 37,000 scooters in its first months — India's loudest EV startup, dubbed the Tesla of two-wheelers. Then the scooters started burning: a Pune fire on March 26, 2022 went viral, and other Indian EV makers had fires of their own.
On April 24, 2022, Ola recalled 1,441 S1 Pro scooters from a specific batch — a pre-emptive recall, the CEO calling the Pune fire likely an isolated one, with each recalled scooter to be diagnosed across battery, thermal and safety systems. The government's NITI Aayog withheld comment pending investigation; the dealers' federation FADA demanded tougher regulation of the whole EV two-wheeler market.
The recall was the cheap part. The fires turned the story from disruption to quality control: experts pointed at foreign battery technology shipped without adaptation to Indian heat, floods and roads, and at light regulation that let startups rush to market. The brand that sold the future spent the spring defending the present.
Why it happened
- Scale outran testing: 100,000 orders in 24 hours set a delivery clock that quality control could not match, in a market with no recall regime to slow it down
- Imported battery technology was shipped into Indian heatwaves and floods without local adaptation — the environment the cells met was not the one they were validated for
- The first answer was 'isolated incident' — a framing that protected the valuation and gave regulators and rivals the quote they needed
The lesson
A launch that outruns its quality control borrows trust from every fire that follows — in a market without a recall regime, the first viral fire writes the regulation.
