Ogura's pickles: an apple on the label's blind side

Apple allergen missing from the label of Hakata Bijin and chopped-eggplant pickles sold from Hiroshima to Kyushu. Announced 31 Jul 2026; refund or collection.

Ogura Kyodo Bussan · 2026-07-31

What happened

Ogura Kyodo Bussan recalled its Hakata Bijin salted pickles and chopped-eggplant salted pickles on July 31, 2026 — the allergen labelling omitted apple. The pickles sold through AEON Kyushu, Izumi, Sato Shokuhin and Nagamatsu Keizo Shoten from Hiroshima to Kyushu.

No incident was reported. The remedy is refund and collection.

A pickle's flavouring carries an allergen the label never named.

Why it happened

  • Apple undeclared on two salted-pickle products — recalled Jul 31, 2026; sold Hiroshima to Kyushu; refund and collection
  • The allergen rides in the seasoning — the ingredient list stopped before the flavour
  • The recall's range is the regional grocery web — AEON Kyushu to a roadside shop
What it costRefund and collection; the unnamed appleembarrassing

The lesson

Allergen labels fail at the ingredient nobody counts as one — the apple in the seasoning is still an apple. The label is only as complete as the recipe's fine print.
