Brandi and Hiver owner Newnex filed for court receivership — MAU crashed from 1M to 300K
Newnex ran Korean fashion platforms Brandi and Hiver; Coupang and Temu crushed MAU from 1M to 300K; court rehabilitation began Sep 2025

What happened
Newnex operated two Korean fashion e-commerce platforms: Brandi and Hiver. Brandi was a women's fashion marketplace popular among young Korean shoppers. At its peak the company's platforms reached 1 million monthly active users and appeared on track to capture a meaningful share of Korea's online fashion market.
But competition from larger platforms — Coupang, AliExpress, and Temu — steadily eroded Newnex's user base. MAU fell from 1 million to just 300,000, a 70% decline. Marketing spend to defend market share was unsustainable, and the company never turned a profit. Revenue dropped to 37.7 billion won in 2024 with an operating loss of 9.2 billion won. The cumulative deficit exceeded 100 billion won against total debt of approximately 90 billion won.
Newnex filed for corporate rehabilitation on September 16, 2025. The Seoul Bankruptcy Court decided to begin rehabilitation proceedings on September 29, 2025. The company employed approximately 150 people at the time of filing. It admitted that cost-cutting and investment attraction efforts had reached their limits.
Why it happened
- Newnex's fashion platforms were too small to compete with Coupang, AliExpress and Temu, which dominated through logistics scale, China supply chain, and deep discounts
- Customer acquisition costs were unsustainably high — marketing spending consumed margins that were already thin in fashion e-commerce
- The company spent years chasing growth without reaching profitability, accumulating over 100 billion won in deficits
- Revenue halved as MAU collapsed from 1 million to 300,000, making the cost structure impossible to sustain
The lesson
A platform too small to enjoy network effects, logistics scale, or supply-chain advantages cannot outspend bigger rivals on marketing — it will burn through its equity before the market consolidates.
Aftermath
The Seoul Bankruptcy Court began rehabilitation proceedings on 29 Sep 2025. Newnex continued limited operations while seeking a restructuring plan or buyer. The company's platforms Brandi and Hiver remained accessible during the proceedings. Creditor claims were scheduled for review in the months following the court decision.
