What happened
The 2023 Nanyang MIDI Music Festival ran from 29 September to 2 October in Wolong District, Nanyang, Henan — a four-day event over the National Day holiday that drew tens of thousands of attendees, with a large camping area set up for concertgoers.
As the festival ended, attendees reported large-scale theft from the campsite: tents, sleeping bags, phones, laptops and even car keys were taken. On 3 October the festival organising committee issued a statement acknowledging the losses and said police were recovering stolen items; on 5 October local authorities said a number of items had been recovered and promised compensation for what could not be found.
The incident became a national social-media scandal over the holiday, with videos of stripped campsites circulating widely. The festival — already an experiment in taking a major music brand to a smaller city — ended its Nanyang edition under a cloud, and the recovery effort continued for days after the site emptied.
Why it happened
- The camping area was set up with no effective perimeter or security — the site sat next to surrounding villages, and there was no barrier between campers' belongings and the neighbourhood.
- A viral message telling locals that festival-goers had abandoned their tents triggered a scramble for the campsite's contents as the event wound down.
- The organisers scaled the event for tens of thousands of attendees, but the security plan did not scale with it — a four-day camping festival with no round-the-clock protection of the camping zone.
The lesson
A festival's camping area is part of the product, not an afterthought. When people sleep in tents you sold no security for — and the festival owns the story either way.
Aftermath
After the thefts, Nanyang authorities said items had been recovered and promised compensation for unrecovered property; the organisers apologised. The scandal dominated coverage of the 2023 MIDI festival and became a cautionary tale for music festivals with free camping in China. The MIDI brand continued elsewhere, but the Nanyang edition's reputation did not recover.
