MPM led Brazil's agency ranking for fifteen years — the network bought it and buried it
Founded in Porto Alegre in 1957, MPM became Brazil's number one agency, billing US$180 million. Sold to a network in 1991, extinct by 1996.

What it means today
A firm whose top line rides on one kind of client — above all a state client — is renting its position. When the cycle turns, the ranking goes with it; the sale that looked like an exit reads, years later, as an extinction.
What happened
Three partners — Antônio Mafuz, Petrônio Corrêa and Luiz Macedo — opened MPM Propaganda in Porto Alegre in 1957. The agency expanded nationally from the 1960s, jumped from fourth to first in the Brazilian rankings between 1974 and 1976, and held the top place until 1991 with a single exception — third in 1978. At the end of 1990 it billed US$180 million, kept offices in nearly every state capital, and once ran the accounts of six competing banks at the same time.
The billings stood on concentration: much of MPM's growth rode on government advertising — one kind of client, tied to one political cycle. When that era ended, the founders chose a network over independence: in 1991 MPM was sold to the multinational Lintas Worldwide and renamed MPM:Lintas. The trade recorded it as the end of Brazil's largest agency under national capital.
The name did not last either. In 1996 the agency was renamed again and the letters MPM came off the door — fifteen years of number-one rankings, Fiat's Brazilian entry campaign and half the country's agency lore, extinguished inside the holding that had bought it.
Why it happened
- MPM's billings leaned on one kind of client — government accounts — whose loyalty ran on a political cycle rather than results, so the agency's strength was rented.
- The 1991 sale converted an independent shop into a branch: the purchase itself ended MPM as a Brazilian-capital agency, and every decision after was made elsewhere.
- A network keeps a bought name only while it earns; once the founders' era was over, the renaming came, and the brand stopped with the sign.
The lesson
Rankings built on one kind of client — above all a state client — are rented, not owned. When the cycle turns, the sale that looks like an exit reads, years later, as an extinction.
