Melvita pulls out of Japan — L'Occitane ends the organic brand's run 15 years in
French organic brand Melvita ends its Japan business on 31 March 2026 after 15 years — the parent calls the global-strategy decision a painful one.

What happened
Melvita — founded in France in 1983 by biologist and beekeeper Bernard Chevilliat, and part of the L'Occitane Group — landed in Japan in 2011. It earned the B Corporation certification in 2023 and ran a full rebranding in 2024 under the concept of awakening beauty through nature's regenerative power; WWD JAPAN reported at the time that the refreshed image had lifted sales by double digits.
On 19 December 2025 the exit was announced: Melvita ends its Japan business on 31 March 2026. The company described it as a strategic decision taken at global level — the result of weighing how to optimise resources for long-term growth — and called it a painful decision. Staff were offered maximum support, including transfers to other brands inside the L'Occitane Group.
The wind-down ran through the quarter: Lumine Yokohama and Kobe Hankyu closed on 31 January 2026, Hanshin Umeda on 24 February, Tobu Ikebukuro and Abeno Harukas Kintetsu on 3 March, and the official online store stopped selling on 31 March. From 1 April the brand continues in France, Belgium, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia — Japan is the market it gave up.
Why it happened
- The group framed the exit as global resource optimisation: Japan was weighed against every other market in the portfolio and reallocated away.
- A 2024 rebrand and reported double-digit growth could not buy the market security — the decision came fourteen months later.
- The brand lives on elsewhere; what ended was specifically the Japanese operation, stores and all.
The lesson
A market can perform and still be a line item: Melvita rebranded in 2024 with double-digit growth, yet L'Occitane ended the Japan business — fifteen years, five stores, closed by March 2026.
Aftermath
Melvita's Japan business ended on 31 March 2026; the brand continues in France, Belgium, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia. Staff were offered transfers within the L'Occitane Group and re-employment support.
