Mazda's MX-30: 100 miles of range in a 300-mile market — 571 sold, then pulled

California-only, $34K, 100 miles of range: the MX-30 sold 571 US units in two and a half years. Mazda pulled it in 2023 to focus on hybrids.

What happened

The MX-30 was Mazda's first battery EV: a small crossover with rear-hinged freestyle doors, a cork-lined interior, and 100 miles of EPA range — in a market where rivals sold 250 and more. Mazda sold it only in California, priced it around $34,000, and explained the tiny battery as a sustainability choice.

Buyers did not agree. US sales were 181 units in 2021, 324 in 2022 and 66 in the first half of 2023 — 571 in total. In July 2023 Mazda confirmed the MX-30 EV would end in the US after the 2023 model year, in a 57-word release, to focus on plug-in hybrids like the CX-90. The rotary range-extender version it kept for Japan and Europe never reached the market with the worst range anxiety.

The MX-30 read as a compliance car — built to satisfy a California zero-emission credit rather than a customer. When Mazda pivoted to plug-in hybrids, the same buyers the MX-30 wanted had an answer from Mazda itself, and the 100-mile EV became a footnote with freestyle doors.

Why it happened

  • 100 miles of range against rivals at 250-plus made the spec sheet the obituary — the sustainability rationale for the small battery never survived a comparison shop
  • California-only distribution kept volumes too small to matter and too small to learn from — a one-state launch is a compliance exercise, not a market entry
  • The fix existed and stayed abroad: the rotary range-extender R-EV sold in Japan and Europe, while the US got the battery-only version

The lesson

A compliance car satisfies a regulator, not a customer — when the spec sheet is written for a credit, the buyer's comparison shop writes the obituary.
