Matsumoto Hitoshi's scandal emptied his shows of sponsors in four weeks

A magazine report plus his own suspension cost Japan's most-booked comedian his sponsors, his commercials and the Expo ambassadorship in a month.

What happened

Matsumoto Hitoshi, one half of the comedy duo Downtown, was one of Japan's most ubiquitous TV figures — a fixture of variety shows and commercials and an official ambassador for the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo. In late December 2023, weekly magazine Bunshun reported that two women alleged he had forced them into sexual acts at a 2015 dinner.

The first broadcast of his show after the report — 人志松本の酒のツマミになる話 on 29 December — aired without Asahi Beer, Suntory or Acom in the sponsor credits; each said it had made 'an overall judgment based on the reports' (報道を受けて総合的に判断した). On 8 January 2024 Matsumoto announced a suspension of activities to focus on a lawsuit. That week consumer lender Lake (SBI Shinsei Bank) dropped its sponsor credits and stopped airing his commercials on two shows, and the Expo organisers suspended his ambassadorship.

Kura Sushi replaced a Downtown commercial scheduled from 26 January with one without the duo and removed the pair's banner from its homepage — 'a measure taken in response to Mr Matsumoto's announcement of his activity suspension.' He filed a defamation suit against Bunshun's publisher on 22 January. He returned in November 2025, and his first new TV commercial — for Takasu Clinic — aired on 1 March 2026.

Why it happened

  • The suspension announcement, not any finding, was the trigger — every sponsor's stated reason was 'the reports' and 'the announcement', because no verdict existed yet.
  • The market's first verdict came on the first broadcast: 人志松本の酒のツマミになる話 aired on 29 December and lost Asahi Beer, Suntory and Acom from its credits that same night.
  • The identical formula phrase — 'an overall judgment based on the reports' — across four sponsors shows a market converging on one safe line: nobody wanted to be the last name still attached.
  • Kura Sushi's swap shows how a campaign calendar forces the decision: the Downtown commercial was replaced before it ever aired, three weeks after the report.

The lesson

No sponsor waited for a verdict: the first broadcast after the Bunshun report lost three sponsor names at once, and a commercial scheduled to air in three weeks was replaced before it ever aired.

Aftermath

Matsumoto filed a defamation suit against Weekly Bunshun's publisher Bungeishunju at the Tokyo District Court on 22 January 2024, saying he was suspending activities to focus on the lawsuit. The Osaka-Kansai Expo suspended his ambassadorship on 9 January; Governor Yoshimura said a decision would come once the facts were clarified. He returned in November 2025 on his agency's streaming service DOWNTOWN+, and his first new TV commercial — for Takasu Clinic — aired on 1 March 2026. The sponsors who left in 2023–24 did not return.
