What happened

Li Yundi, the pianist whose Chopin Competition win made him one of China's most polished endorsement faces, was named on 21 October 2021 in a police notice from Beijing's Chaoyang district: a 39-year-old man identified as him had been caught in a prostitution case and admitted the facts.

Within a day the brands left in a row: Piano (皮阿诺), GAC Toyota's Highlander, JD Plus membership, FAW-Volkswagen, Casarte, Yiyangyitouniu dairy and L'Oréal Paris ended or confirmed no cooperation. Mango TV pulled the first seven episodes of its variety show Call Me by Fire, which featured him, overnight.

The China Performance Industry Association published conduct rules with fifteen banned acts and tiered industry boycotts of one, three or five years, or permanent — the framework every partner used to end the relationships the same day, with no negotiation.

Why it happened

  • Seven-plus brands had bet on one endorser, and in China's endorsement market the police notice is the fact: no brand waits for the courts once an official announcement names the person.
  • Mango TV had filmed him into its flagship variety show; removing the first seven episodes overnight meant re-cutting a hit production rather than waiting to see how the case resolved.
  • The association's conduct rules gave every partner a ready-made off-ramp — fifteen banned acts and tiered boycotts — so contracts ended without negotiation, all on the same day.

The lesson

An endorser's value rests on official approval: the day a police notice named Li Yundi, seven-plus partners left without waiting for the facts, because in this market the notice is the fact.

Aftermath

Mango TV removed the first seven episodes of Call Me by Fire overnight and re-cut the rest; the association's tiered boycott framework was invoked across the industry. Li Yundi's commercial career in China ended that week, and the brands moved on as if the contracts had never existed.
