Kotelo, Samsung C&T's womenswear brand, discontinued after four years

Samsung C&T Fashion Division shut down its womenswear brand Kotelo in summer 2025, just four years after its launch in October 2021.

What happened

Kotelo was a womenswear brand launched by Samsung C&T Fashion Division in October 2021, targeting the mid-price segment of Korea's apparel market. The brand was positioned between Samsung C&T's premium luxury labels and its more accessible offerings, aiming to capture fashion-conscious women seeking quality at a moderate price point.

By summer 2025, Samsung C&T discontinued Kotelo as part of a broader restructuring of inefficient brands. The closure was attributed to the K-shaped polarization of Korea's consumer market, where mid-priced brands lost ground to both premium luxury and ultra-low-cost segments. Kotelo operated for approximately four years before being shut down.

The discontinuation reflected a structural shift in Korean retail: consumers increasingly either traded up to premium brands or traded down to value options, leaving mid-tier brands without a sustainable customer base. Samsung C&T chose to cut Kotelo quickly rather than invest further in a segment that showed no signs of recovery.

Why it happened

  • Kotelo was positioned in the mid-price segment, which was squeezed as Korea's consumer market polarized between premium luxury and ultra-low-cost options.
  • The brand never achieved sufficient brand recognition or scale to compete against established womenswear labels in Samsung C&T's own portfolio.
  • Samsung C&T prioritized cutting underperforming brands quickly rather than investing further in a mid-tier label that could not adapt to the K-shaped consumption trend.

The lesson

A mid-priced brand launched by a conglomerate is not immune to the K-shaped market — when consumers polarize, the middle disappears regardless of the parent company's resources.

Aftermath

Kotelo's operations ceased in summer 2025. Samsung C&T Fashion Division continued its restructuring, focusing on premium and luxury brands where margins were higher and brand loyalty stronger. The discontinuation was part of a broader 2025 trend where Korean fashion conglomerates cut mid-tier brands that could not survive the K-shaped consumption pattern, alongside similar moves by Hansae (SJYP) and LF (JOVOY).
