What happened
On 27 April 2007 H.P.FRANCE opened Kioku H.P.FRANCE — 'Kioku', Memory — on the first floor of the Shin-Marunouchi Building, a select shop built around overseas buying: jewelry, bags and objects with a European sensibility. It ran there for eighteen years.
The store closed on 6 January 2026. The company's notice gave no reason, only thanks and a farewell to eighteen-odd years of history. The neighbour survived: H.P.FRANCE BIJOUX Marunouchi, one building over on the Marunouchi Building's first floor, continues.
The closure landed in the middle of a corporate remaking. H.P.FRANCE became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Brighten Japan in September 2024, appointed Kenichiro Tomitaka — formerly of Prada Japan — president in June 2025, and has been launching new formats like Humus and Declic. An eighteen-year-old select shop sat on the wrong side of that portfolio review.
Why it happened
- Under new ownership and a new president every old format is re-judged; a 2007 single-store select shop did not survive the review.
- What survived next door shows the cut: the tighter, jewellery-focused BIJOUX format stayed; the broad-brush generalist went.
- No reason was announced, which is itself the pattern — quiet portfolio pruning dressed as a farewell.
The lesson
When a company changes hands, its old shops get re-judged. Kioku ran 18 years in Marunouchi and closed without a stated reason — a new portfolio has no room for yesterday's format.
Aftermath
H.P.FRANCE continues with its remaining shops, including H.P.FRANCE BIJOUX Marunouchi in the adjacent Marunouchi Building, and its newer formats under Brighten Japan ownership. The Shin-Marunouchi unit went back to the building's tenant mix.
