Adult Swim cut ties with Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland over abuse charges

On 24 Jan 2023, a day after his felony charges surfaced, Adult Swim ended its association with the co-creator and recast his Rick and Morty voice roles.

What happened

On 24 January 2023, Adult Swim said it had 'ended its association' with Justin Roiland, co-creator and lead voice of Rick and Morty, hours after his pending felony charges became public. The network's one-line statement came with the show's promise that season seven would still air.

The charges dated to a January 2020 incident: a felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and a felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud or deceit, against a woman he was dating. Roiland pleaded not guilty in 2020, and the case was still pending when the news broke.

The split forced a recast of the two title characters and made Dan Harmon the show's sole showrunner. Roiland also resigned from Squanch Games, the studio he had co-founded. Two months later, in March 2023, the Orange County district attorney dropped all charges, citing insufficient evidence — after the franchise had already been rebuilt without him.

Why it happened

  • The franchise was built on one voice: Roiland voiced both title characters, so the network could not quietly part ways without a visible recast.
  • The decision came the same day the charges became public — no wait for the legal process, because the association itself was the risk.
  • Production could not stop: Rick and Morty was locked in through season 10, so Adult Swim had to continue the show while removing the man it was named around.

The lesson

A franchise built on one voice is a single point of failure: the network had to keep the show while removing the man it was named around. Recasting was the only option — the bet was the voice itself.

Aftermath

All charges were dismissed by the Orange County district attorney on 22 March 2023 for insufficient evidence. Roiland said he had 'always known that these claims were false'; the recast voices took over in season seven.
