Advertisers retreated from Johnny's talent and the agency retired its own name
After Johnny & Associates admitted its late founder's abuse, Asahi, JAL and Nippon Life stopped using its talent, and the agency ended its business.

What happened
Johnny & Associates was Japan's most powerful talent agency, its idols the face of campaigns across the country. On 7 September 2023 its president acknowledged for the first time that the late founder Johnny Kitagawa had sexually abused boys and young men, apologised, and resigned, after an independent investigation found abuse spanning six decades. The admission followed a BBC documentary in March 2023 that prompted more victims to come forward.
The brand exodus came within days. Asahi Group Holdings said it would no longer air ads featuring three of its stars, and Japan Airlines and Nippon Life Insurance stopped using Johnny's talent too. On 2 October 2023 the company announced it would end its talent business, change its name and create a new firm to manage its performers, focusing instead on compensation.
Why it happened
- An agency's product is the public standing of its talent: the day the company itself confirmed the abuse, every active campaign featuring its performers became a reputational liability.
- Advertisers moved without waiting for a verdict — Asahi, JAL and Nippon Life all acted within days of the admission, because defending the association already cost more than the ads did.
- The name itself became the problem: retiring it and ending the talent business was the only way the company could keep paying compensation.
The lesson
An agency's brand is the reputation of the talent it manages: one official admission turned every campaign into a liability, and the agency's own name became unsellable.
Aftermath
On 2 October 2023 Johnny & Associates said it would discontinue its talent agency business, change its name and set up a new firm to manage its performers, focusing on compensation for victims. The Johnny's name was retired.
