Nordstrom closed all three Jeffrey stores in a single day — no one filled the void

Jeffrey Kalinsky opened his first store inside the Saks wing of Atlanta's Phipps Plaza on August 2, 1990 — a curated edit of designer clothes sold with personal attention — and added the Meatpacking Manhattan store in 1999. Nordstrom bought a controlling stake in 2005, keeping Kalinsky as designer fashion director, and added a Palo Alto store in 2018.

Then came May 18, 2020: in the same wave that closed 16 full-line Nordstrom stores, all three Jeffreys were announced to close. The pandemic had removed the high-touch service that justified a luxury boutique; analysts said Nordstrom was over-weighted in apparel. Kalinsky retired — 'disappointed in their decision,' though he said he understood — and Pete Nordstrom sold him back his own name for $1.

The chain Nordstrom had expanded only two years earlier was simply gone. Six years on, Kalinsky said what everyone in luxury retail had noticed: 'Nobody filled the void we left.' He signed a lease in Buckhead Village — the former Dior space — in September 2025 and reopened Jeffrey on August 2, 2026, 36 years after the first store, as sole owner, back on the selling floor himself.
