IndexPDX closed its 12-year Portland sneaker shop — Old Town foot traffic never came back
Portland's sneaker consignment shop IndexPDX shut its Chinatown storefront in Jan 2026 after 12 years, blaming a block hollowed out by lost foot traffic.

What happened
IndexPDX, a Portland sneaker consignment shop that opened around 2013, announced on December 1, 2025 that it would close its Chinatown storefront. The shop had built a loyal following on fair consignment pricing and rare drops, a rare independent alternative to marked-up big-name resale stores.
Its location sat in Old Town, a neighborhood that became a hub of social services and homeless support. City officials pointed to decreased sales, weaker foot traffic and public safety concerns, and conditions deteriorated steadily after the pandemic.
IndexPDX chose not to fight the street. It framed the decision as 'an end of an era' rather than a failure, and said it would reduce operations to online-only in early 2026.
The lesson is that a consignment shop's inventory is only as good as the people who walk past it. When the block empties, even a beloved, fairly priced store cannot pay rent on a sidewalk nobody walks.
Why it happened
- IndexPDX opened around 2013 and built its name on fair consignment pricing and rare drops, becoming a Portland sneaker-culture anchor.
- Its Chinatown home sat in Old Town, which became a hub of social services and homeless support; sales fell, foot traffic dropped and public safety concerns rose.
- Conditions deteriorated steadily after the pandemic, and nearby sneaker businesses left one by one, starving the block of the crowd a consignment shop needs.
- The store announced on Instagram that it would close its brick-and-mortar and go online-only, framing the end not as a loss but as 'an end of an era.'
The lesson
A consignment shop lives or dies on foot traffic. IndexPDX kept a fair-priced flagship in Old Town as the street emptied — goodwill does not pay rent on a dead sidewalk.
Aftermath
IndexPDX closed its physical store on Friday, January 30, 2026, and shifted to online-only operations. The closure came as neighboring businesses, including sneaker-themed Deadstock Coffee, also left Old Town, worrying other shop owners that more would follow.
