Jecca Blac closed after nearly a decade — gender-free makeup brand lost its key investor
Jessica Blackler's inclusive beauty brand Jecca Blac shut down in September 2025 after the sudden death of its key investor and business partner.

What happened
Jecca Blac was a vegan and gender-free make-up brand founded by Jessica Blackler in 2017 under the name Jecca Makeup, rebranding to Jecca Blac in 2019. The brand targeted the transgender community and offered one-to-one make-up tutorials to trans customers, building a loyal following around inclusive beauty. It was stocked by Sephora, Superdrug, and Beauty Bay, and sold over two million units across nearly a decade of operation.
On September 24, 2025, Blackler announced via Instagram that the brand would cease trading permanently. She cited the sudden passing of an unnamed business partner and investor — described as her "greatest source of support" — combined with a number of unfortunate events in recent years that made continuing the business unsustainable. The brand hosted a closing-down sale on its website for final stock clearance.
Jecca Blac was one of several beauty brand closures in 2025, alongside Youthforia, Ami Colé, and Flower Beauty. The broader beauty market faced saturation and increasingly volatile conditions, with both small independent brands and larger players struggling to maintain profitability. Blackler's statement emphasised that the decision was heartbreaking but necessary.
Why it happened
- The sudden death of the brand's key investor and business partner removed both the capital and strategic support that had sustained the business through earlier challenges.
- A saturated beauty market with rising competition from both indie startups and established players made it difficult for a purpose-driven niche brand to maintain retail presence and margins.
- The brand's focus on the transgender community, while deeply valued by its customers, limited its addressable market and made it vulnerable to shifts in retail distribution and consumer spending.
The lesson
An inclusive mission and strong retail distribution cannot replace the capital and strategic support of a key backer — when the investor behind a purpose-driven brand is gone, the business follows.
Aftermath
Jecca Blac ceased trading in September 2025. Founder Jessica Blackler did not announce plans for a new venture. The brand's closure was part of a wave of beauty brand shutdowns in 2025 as market saturation and investor caution squeezed independent labels.
