Innisfree sold an eyeshadow with an undisclosed AI model — all the ads came down
Amorepacific's Innisfree used an undeclared AI-generated model in eyeshadow ads, misread a matte shade as glossy, and pulled every ad after the backlash.

What happened
Innisfree, an affiliate of Amorepacific, used generative-AI model images in advertisements for the colour-development shades of some of its eyeshadow products, without telling consumers the models were AI-generated.
The images misrepresented the product: a shadow labelled matte was rendered glossy. When a consumer asked the company for model information, it replied that AI had been used to express the colour development, and the exchange spread across social media.
Consumers objected that undisclosed AI images could not be trusted for a colour cosmetic's true shade and texture. As the controversy grew, the ad images were taken down across the official website and all online sales channels. Innisfree said its intent had been to reflect the AI-model trend but that future ads would reflect product characteristics more accurately, and Amorepacific promised to improve so product traits were conveyed accurately and reliably.
Why it happened
- The AI model was used without disclosure, so consumers could not tell the ad from a real product shot for a colour cosmetic.
- The AI render altered the actual look of the product — a matte shade shown glossy — breaking the trust the ad was supposed to build.
- No Korean law yet required an AI label, so the company shipped the ad relying on the letter of the rule rather than the trust of the buyer.
The lesson
For a product sold on how it looks, an ad image is a promise about the product — an undisclosed AI render that mis-states the shade breaks the trust the ad exists to build.
Aftermath
Innisfree removed the eyeshadow ad images from its official website and all online sales channels and said it would publish ads that reflect product characteristics more accurately. The episode fed a wider debate in South Korea's beauty industry over AI models, which led the government to prepare disclosure rules for AI-generated cosmetics imagery.
