Hitsujiya (ヒツジヤ), Akita clothing retailer that added restaurants, bankrupt in 2025

Hitsujiya sold clothing in Akita since 1953 — a 2019 restart added restaurants, COVID cut sales, and ¥200M of debts ended it in 2025.

What happened

Hitsujiya was a clothing retailer in Odate City, Akita Prefecture, whose original company dated to 1953 and sold women's clothing, underwear, men's clothing, cosmetics, general goods and school uniforms. The old company entered special liquidation in 2020; a new Hitsujiya established in 2019 took over the name and business — then added restaurants to the lineup.

COVID cut the sales first, and they kept falling after it. The company said sales deteriorated without let-up, cash flow tightened, and continuing became impossible.

Hitsujiya applied for self-bankruptcy with the Odate branch of the Akita District Court, with liabilities estimated at about ¥200 million. Reported 7 October 2025.

Why it happened

  • A second act on borrowed time: the old Hitsujiya, founded in 1953, entered special liquidation in 2020, and the successor company could not outrun the same weak local market.
  • Expansion into restaurants: diversifying from clothing into food service spread thin local demand across two businesses instead of fixing either one.
  • COVID took the floor out: pandemic losses started the decline, and sales kept falling afterward — a small-town retailer had no volume left to absorb the hit.

The lesson

A relaunch is not a strategy: Hitsujiya's 2019 successor reopened the Akita clothing name, added restaurants, and still ran out of cash — ¥200M of debts ended it in 2025.

Aftermath

Hitsujiya applied for self-bankruptcy with the Odate branch of the Akita District Court, with liabilities estimated at about ¥200 million. Reported 7 October 2025. The retailer in Odate City, Akita Prefecture sold women's clothing, underwear, men's clothing, cosmetics, general goods and school uniforms, and also ran restaurants. The original Hitsujiya was founded in 1953 and entered special liquidation in 2020; the current company was established in 2019. COVID-19 cut sales and performance kept deteriorating, tightening cash flow until the company judged continuation impossible.
