Hamburgini served contaminated mayo in Riyadh — 75 sickened, one dead, chain liquidated

Botulism in a supplier's mayonnaise sickened 75 and killed one in Riyadh in 2024. A court ordered Hamburgini's parent into liquidation.

What happened

Between April and May 2024, 75 people in Riyadh were sickened and one person died after eating at Hamburgini, a Saudi burger chain that had operated for twelve years. Saudi Food and Drug Authority laboratory tests identified Clostridium botulinum in a sample of BON TUM mayonnaise, a product supplied to Hamburgini by an outside manufacturer.

The implicated mayonnaise was withdrawn from the market, remaining stock was destroyed, and the producer's factory was suspended. But the damage to Hamburgini was irreversible. The chain, which had been one of Saudi Arabia's most recognised local burger brands, lost its customers and its revenue in the months that followed.

On 25 August 2025 a Riyadh court opened liquidation proceedings against Food Basics Trading Company, Hamburgini's parent. A bankruptcy trustee invited creditors to submit claims within 90 days. A twelve-year-old brand was ended by a single contaminated ingredient from a supplier it had not adequately verified.

Why it happened

  • The contaminated ingredient came from a supplier, but Hamburgini bore the responsibility for what it served to customers.
  • No incoming quality check caught the botulism before the mayonnaise reached the kitchen.
  • Foodborne botulism is rare and lethal — a single contaminated batch is enough to destroy a brand and take a life.
  • The twelve-year reputation of the chain could not survive a single outbreak; trust in food safety is binary.

The lesson

A restaurant is responsible for every ingredient it serves, regardless of who made it. One contaminated batch from one supplier ended a twelve-year-old chain and took a life.
